LuM Lighting Design worked with Hinojosa, Architecture & Interiors on this innovative approach to animal shelter design. The Design Team took a former industrial complex and transformed it into a 40,000 square foot state of the art and visually stunning animal shelter for SPCA of Texas. Walking into the 2-story atrium, one is greeted with a brightly illuminated oversized photo montage by photographer Suzanne Demaree that covers the walls and ceilings. Concepts for the adoption areas included a radically creative approach which features the animals in a setting that is retail-like. Gone are the wire cages and dismal, utilitarian lighting of animal shelters of the past. We brought brightness and life to this space by accentuating the animal enclosures while also providing dimmable lighting with shielded sources to reduce animal stress. Adoptable cats look into a common visitor’s area that echos a fish bowl and dog enclosures are individual boutique suites. The space is welcoming to prospective pet parents and has resulted in an increase in pet adoptions.
